Traverse City Waterfront Hotel Kicks Off Great Outdoor Dining Season

TRAVERSE CITY, MI — Nothing says summer chill in Traverse City more than relaxing outdoors — and bonus points if you can find a spot by the water. The team behind the newly renovated Delamar The Traverse City Hotel loves its location along Grand Traverse Bay this time of year and recently hosted a garden party to celebrate the kick-off of its terrace summer season.

It reminded us that there are so many great outdoor spots to set up shop and enjoy a meal, snack or just an adult drink in Traverse City or along the nearby peninsulas of Old Mission and Leelanau. It’s the Cross the Wine Coast, after all, and almost all tasting rooms have outdoor space with spectacular views of the east or west bay, or rolling vineyards. Ditto for many of our favorite craft beer spots. You can really expand into destination beer gardens like Lot of hops at the edge of Suttons Bay, or create the holiday atmosphere by eating or drinking while sailing in the bay aboard the Manitou tall shipthe Nauti-Cat or the wind dancer.

Our take: When you have the time, be sure to eat with a view. It’s a whole different perspective.

The Delamar’s patio offers stunning views of West Grand Traverse Bay.

Dorin Constantin, manager of Delamar’s Artisan restaurant, knows what people are craving this season. Artisan’s menu and plate presentations capture the attention of locals and vacationers alike, and the culinary team even provides boxed meals for guests aboard some of the bay’s boat tours.

“It’s hard to describe in a few words the feeling of being in Artisan,” Constantin said. “From the moment you walk through the glass doors: the flowers, the art, the pewter bar in the Tavern, the fireplaces, the immaculate white tablecloths in the dining room. Then take a stroll outside to see the pergola, chic outdoor lounge, beautiful outdoor bar, garden, lights, live music. Did I say the water views? …these are the best in Northern Michigan.

When it comes to finding a place in the Traverse City area to dine al fresco, our friends at Traverse City Tourism have a list ready to go your next visit.

“Whether you’re looking for your morning cup of coffee, your midday fuel or a long sit-down dinner, there are plenty of options for sitting outside for your meals,” tourism staff said. “Find a terrace downtown or in one of the nearby port towns. Enjoy a meal with a waterfront view, or take your food for a picnic. In addition, many wine tastings, spirits tastings or beer tours of the region are now offered outdoors.
