The resort’s daring new Sage Run joins Michigan’s top courses, including Sweetgrass, in recognition of the magazine’s expert panelists
Harris, Mich. – Michigan’s newest Upper Peninsula golf course, Sage Run at Island Resort & Casino, has been named golf week list of “Best in State” courses. Sage Run, ranked 20th on the list, is the resort’s second run and Paul Albanese’s follow-up to his popular Sweetgrass design, the resort’s first run.
Golfweek’s Course Rating Panel continuously evaluates courses and rates them against 10 criteria, then delivers a unique overall rating to each course. The overall grades for each course are then averaged together, and then ranked against the other courses in its state, to produce the final ranking. All of the courses on the list allow public access in one way or another.
“Michigan is known for having some of the best public golf courses in America and our state rankings by Golfweek show it,” said Tony Mancilla, general manager of Island Resort. “Making this list and standing alongside these other great layouts is a testament to the dramatic, bold and contrasting designs created by Albanese, and the standards to which our superintendents maintain the courses to deliver an incredible golfing experience.”
Sage Run is built around a natural scenic ridge, where golfers must find the fairways – and their right side avoiding rough fescue – to set up ideal angles and scoring opportunities on the greens. The course features exceptional variety, including holes like the significantly uphill par-3 5th or the short par-4 16e which challenges you to take an uphill shot to a blind landing zone. Albanese said the famed Royal County Down in Northern Ireland served as inspiration for Sage Run’s bunkering and overall “rough and rugged” aesthetic. The course also hosts the Island Resort Collegiate Championship, a two-day, 54-hole, invitational stroke play tournament featuring some of the best teams and college players in the country.
“It’s a great honor to have Sage Run recognized as one of Michigan’s top courses, especially given the quality and depth of Michigan’s best architects and designs,” says Albanese. “It was my goal with Sage Run to create a completely different golfing experience for resort guests. The rugged terrain the ridge runs through was completely different from Sweetgrass which allowed us to be bold and creative with fun and exciting shooting options.
Prior to Sage Run, Sweetgrass was the first course at the Island Resort & Casino, which opened in 2007 to rave reviews. Currently ranked #10 in Golfweek’s Best State Courses in Michigan and recognized by GOLF Magazine and Golf Digest’s Best in State rankings, Sweetgrass is a prairie-style course that meanders to an open view where numerous greens and flags can be seen. far away. Golfers also discover some of the most fun greens in the game (Redan, Biarritz, Island and Double-green). Located next to the complex, the rooms located high in the hotel tower offer panoramic views of the spectacular finishing holes, the par-5 9e and 18e holes which are divided by a picturesque and strategic pond and waterfall.
