Hotel Review: SAii Laguna Phuket, Bang Tao Beach, Phuket in Thailand

Dotted across Thailand’s pristine, if often stormy coastline, the SAii Laguna Phuket is a truly stunning resort that recently wowed me. However, I have to admit that I felt like I was in something ultra-special over the next four days, minutes after stepping onto the hotel porch after a short drive from the airport.

Greeted with a garland of orchids, a scented cold towel, a refreshing iced hibiscus drink and that quintessentially Thai greeting, I knew I had made the right choice choosing this place for my first trip to Thailand in near three years.

While there’s no shortage of luxury accommodation options at Laguna Phuket – one of Phuket’s most luxurious enclaves – SAii Laguna Phuket is a truly exceptional resort destination. Located next to Bangtao Beach, one of Thailand’s most exquisite beaches, its lush tropical gardens open onto a tranquil lagoon, just steps from the Andaman Sea. Part of the aforementioned gated Laguna Phuket resort –– which is also home to several other five-star resorts, interesting restaurants, and shopping areas — this sprawling resort seems to have it all.

Arranged in a traditional and colonial Thai sala architectural style, the Grand Lobby is an impressive space. And one that offers guests stunning waterfront views that form a spectacular backdrop. Outfitted with plenty of polished teak wood accents, plantation-style hanging fans, and basket-shaped pendant lights, the space is inviting and relaxed. However, I should particularly mention the corner Chinese apothecary cabinet that hands out free cookies and mini packets of mixed nuts that you can take home 24/7.

Bedroom

The One Bedroom Ocean Suite has a private terrace with a view of the Andaman Sea

Appointed to perfection, the various wings of the resort have 255 rooms and suites overlooking the lagoon, pools or the mighty Andaman Sea. One such example is the One Bedroom Ocean Suite. All appointed with terracotta floors, silk furniture, a private terrace and a sumptuous Thai-style reading nook, this one is as luxurious as it gets.

Since my ocean-facing room was a Club Room, I had all-day access to the resort’s dedicated club — a separate structure, which appears to float above the lagoon. An exclusive club lounge with panoramic views, this is where one can get complimentary drinks and snacks for club and suite level guests. It also includes personalized check-in, an elegant a la carte breakfast, as well as all-day tea, coffee and refreshments, afternoon snacks and evening cocktails with tasting plates.

Food and drink

Speaking of food, blame it on the beach look, but I was in a constant battle with my hunger pangs throughout my four days at SAii Laguna Phuket. Luckily for me, a satisfying snack or hearty meal was never too far away.

The resort offers a number of dining options ranging from the beautifully named duo Miss Olive Oyl and Mr. Tomyam to others. While the former offers something you won’t find anywhere else in Phuket: a culinary tour of the Mediterranean with a menu ranging from Sicily to the Levantine Coast, the latter is an interesting open-air restaurant.

Beachfront on Bangtao Beach, in the resort’s spectacular swimming pool, Mr. Tomyam offers meals from morning to evening. It’s the combination of the essence of Thai dishes with the delights of international classics that has made this my favorite place to dine. For those who prefer something lighter, the Locavore restaurant is an inviting indoor terrace to relax at any time of the day with a coffee or to watch the sunset with cocktails and soft music.

The resort offers a variety of water sports for guests

Being a beach resort, there is no shortage of gambling activities here. Whether you are a child or an adult, you will find what you are looking for. Because there are not one, not two, but three swimming pools, including a 55-meter waterslide and a variety of sports options for everyone.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the resort offers all of its non-motorized water activities like paddleboarding, kayaking, and surfing for free. For those who want to stay active, there is also a fitness center and an international tennis academy with indoor and outdoor courts, squash and badminton courts.

Or maybe we could always spend an evening lounging in the cabanas by the pool. These are accompanied by personalized butler service offering spectacular grilled prawns, washed down with perfectly prepared Mai Tai cocktails. Pure happiness.

For sybarites like me, there is the massage room near the main pool. Offering a variety of traditional Thai and oil massages, this makeshift tent spa area that replaces a more permanent spa structure is no less luxurious and relaxing. With qualified therapists on hand to take care of all your treatment needs, you’re sure to be in bliss when you’re done.

In a word

SAii Laguna Phuket is one of Thailand’s most luxurious retreats

With its multitude of natural, cultural and culinary attractions on offer and almost every inch of its space imbued with that quintessentially Thai hallmark of hospitality, choosing the SAii Laguna Phuket is a no-brainer. Add to that the guarantee of fun and sunny days with a number of water sports and other ‘luxury activities’ and your holiday on the Andaman Coast of Thailand looks good.

Getting There

Laguna Phuket gated resort is 25 minutes drive from Phuket Airport. This bustling international airport offers plenty of connection options from all over Thailand, Asia, Europe and Australia on a number of airlines. If arriving by speedboat from one of the many islands on Thailand’s Andaman coast, such as Koh Phi Phi in Krabi, the resort is a half-hour drive from Phuket’s Ao Po Grand Marina pier located on the east side of the island.
