Home ‘Christmas Vacation’: California Owner Said To Remove Griswold-Inspired Front Yard Display Or Face Fines

LA MIRADA, Calif .– A California owner known for making Christmas decorations based on the movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” could soon be fined if he doesn’t remove the latest addition to his screen.

This is the fourth year that the 1989 holiday classic has taken over Jeff Norton’s front yard in La Mirada, a city in southeast Los Angeles County.

“You know, as a kid, we loved this movie. We really gravitated around him as a family, and he kind of grew inside of us. And then I had this fantasy of really fitting into it. and I went out one day and started putting lights on the house, and one thing led to another, ”Norton said.

Every year, Norton Street closes its doors. He said he welcomes hundreds of people from across the country every evening to take to the Griswold-inspired stage. Each year it adds more to the elaborate holiday display.

“From the motorhome to the police scene to the Ford Taurus with the tree,” Norton said.

It takes countless hours of online shopping, weeks of work, and even permanent house painting to get everything just right.

“I had to have this ugly yellow with the ugly green shutters, the whole thing,” he added.

But this year’s addition, a false second floor above his house, does not suit the town of La Mirada. They want that part removed.

“I said, ‘There’s no way in this world that I’m going to remove this until January 1st. “It’s a makeshift false facade that I put on my roof,” Norton said.

The City Manager told our sister station KABC that they are encouraging Norton’s Christmas spirit. It’s even been the recipient of the city’s Holiday Home Decorating Program Award in the past, but Norton built the new section without a permit, and city staff said they didn’t want it to fly away with it. strong wind or accidentally injures someone.

If Norton doesn’t comply, quotes will come, starting at $ 100 and increasing weekly.

“I will happily pay this fine more than fortunately. I’m not necessarily happy, but I will to keep this going for the whole community. I’m not going to take it off – no ifs and buts,” Norton said.

The city manager said Norton had until the end of this weekend to remove the bogus second floor from its display before the warnings started to go off.
