From spectator to speaker: the complex’s path to carbon neutrality leads from the UN’s Rio Earth Summit 1992 to the COP26 in Glasgow 2021

Ewald Biemans, Owner / CEO of Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort

The only carbon neutral hotel in the Caribbean to share a setting for a regenerative, guilt-free vacation

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, October 22, 2021 / – It has been 29 years since the famous United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and Ewald Biemans, owner / CEO of Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort in Aruba is still as inspired as the day he heard the call to action issued to the world at this conference. An avid news enthusiast, Biemans feverishly read and watched all the coverage he could find on the tiny island of Aruba as the crucial 1992 rally took place. Describing it as ‘a wake-up call’, the conference accelerated its early efforts towards what is now the Caribbean’s most eco-awarded and most carbon-neutral hotel by 2018 and, ultimately, a United Nations laureate.

Last year Bucuti & Tara became the first hotel in United Nations history to win the coveted Global UN 2020 Climate Action Award for Climate Neutral Now. This year, Biemans was invited to participate as a speaker at the 26th annual UN climate change conference, the Conference of the Parties or COP26, from November 1-12, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland, and is expected to attract 30,000 participants. COP26 is considered the world’s most important climate change summit in the race to keep a handy 1.5 degree temperature rise limit cited by the 2015 Paris Agreement, with just nine years before the ecological consequences were catastrophic and irreversible.

Provide the solution: “highly scalable and reproducible” for the hospitality industry
While the subject of climate change is intimidating, Biemans’ appearance will bring more than hope as he will provide strong support and concrete initiatives that can be implemented in hotels and similar businesses. When awarding Bucuti & Tara, the UNFCCC Secretariat praised the resort for being “highly reproducible and scalable”, thus uniquely positioning it to help others in the huge global travel and tourism industry representing 10% of world GDP. Biemans’ appearance at COP26 will help demystify the zeroing process, structure the necessary framework, and explain how hoteliers can deliver a memorable vacation that is both financially successful and regenerative.

“Every day I think of the 1992 UN Rio Earth Summit as the call to action we heard at Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort ultimately leading us to deliver a guilt-free vacation that allows to customers to exchange their carbon footprint for that of sand, and it will be an honor to share our sustainable development solutions with others at COP26 so that we are all winners, because we must all win to have a healthier future , safer and more resilient ”, shares Ewald Biemans, owner / CEO of Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort. “Climate change is the biggest pandemic of this life. ”
