Change vacation hotel – Dali, China

We dare say that this hotel in Yunnan Province of China is not going to win any awards for grammatically accurate branding anytime soon. However, there is no denying its thoughtful intentions and the purpose of its designers, Co-Direction Interior Design who transformed a former private residence into a charming 19-room property.

The hotel’s location – in the middle of Dali’s old town – informs much of its aesthetic. In particular, the layered courtyards and heavy use of bamboo, gray brick, pointed roofs, and exposed herringbone ceilings are a gentle ode to traditional residential architecture. Soft, because Co-Direction breaks the classic references in the rooms with rigorously modern and personalized furniture.

“We have respected the character of the original public spaces,” says design director Jiang Xiao-Lin. “We haven’t done a lot of design here, except to enrich the spatial experience with furniture. It is in the rooms that we have been able to particularly express the local tradition in a contemporary way.

Amenities are quite limited – there is no spa and the jewel restaurant only serves breakfast – although the hotel is particularly excited about the reflective pond on the ground floor whose mirrored flat surface let the sky enter through the elongated sky well. Meanwhile, an outdoor terrace offers beautiful views of the distant Cangshan Mountains.
