5 reasons why Geneva is more of a seaside resort than a city break

When you think of visiting a city, you usually think of a short break with many visits. You don’t usually think about relaxing in the sun or enjoying the outdoors. Geneva is a city that offers very different holidays, perfect to enjoy during the summer months. The average high temperature during the peak of summer is 77-78F (25-26c), making it ideal for a more relaxed break.

1. Nautical activities

Geneva is located on the edge of Lake Geneva (also known as Lake Geneva with crystal clear turquoise water, which you are probably more used to seeing near an exotic beach. Geneva is on the Rhone, which makes it the break ideal for those who love sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking are perfect for making the most of the lake.

A little further, rafting on the Arve offers waterfalls, rapids and swimming areas. If you prefer something a little quieter, you can enjoy one of the many lake cruises that allow you to get up close to the Jet D’Eau and explore the other parts of the lake.

2. Yes, there are even beaches…

Geneva has developed areas for tourists and locals to relax by the beautiful lake, and there are now several beaches and waterside terraces to enjoy the lake. The lake might be a bit chilly for some with a temperature of 23°C, but at Geneva’s main beach there is also an outdoor Olympic swimming pool for the less brave! It also has paddling pools, slides and high plunges.

In summer, there is also a beach floating on the water right in the heart of the city. The amarr’s public beach and swimming pool are located near the Pont de la Machine, opposite the Cité du Temps.

3. Spas

Switzerland has long had the reputation of being synonymous with health and spas. In Geneva itself, one of the best options is the Bain Bleu which is located next to Geneva Plage. The building has its own entrance on Genève Plage, allowing you to enjoy both in one visit. The spa itself has a stunning rooftop hydrotherapy pool heated to a comforting temperature of 36°C. Here you can enjoy various hydrotherapy stations in the large pool or relax by the pool with a drink from the bar. The terrace offers a beautiful panorama of the lake and the mountains to perfect your relaxation. Overall, there are 3,000 m² of indoor and outdoor water baths to enjoy.

On less sunny days, there’s also a Hamman Experience and the Mystical Pool, a spectacularly staged hydrotherapy pool with a waterfall shower and hidden nooks. Bain Bleu also offers a variety of treatments.

4. Vineyards

It’s a bit of a secret that Geneva is actually only about 30 minutes from a beautiful wine region. However, unlike many wine regions, it is untouched by tourism. Stroll through pretty fairy-tale villages and fields of sunflowers as you make your way to the Chasselas region. Most vineyards do not export abroad, so take the opportunity to taste these wines, which are often made with grapes native to Switzerland, such as Gamaret.

A fun way to tour the vineyards is by Tuk-Tuk. The company can also organize dinner or drinks on board the Tuk Tuk during your trip. One of the best vineyards to visit as a starting point is Domaine Les Perrières. Due to the small nature of the wineries here, many require an appointment to taste. Domaine Des Perriers, however, is open six days a week and you can just walk around. It is a family estate now run by the 8th generation of the Rochaix family who have been making wine since 1794.

They also make a huge range of wines, so not only will there be something for most palates, but it also means there’s more to taste! Wines range from the more local Gameret varietals to sparkling or fruity Sauvignon Blanc.

5. Location, location, location

Near Geneva, there are plenty of options for day trips or perhaps a getaway for two. If you want a different view of Geneva, you can visit Mont Salève, which is only a short bus ride from the city to the base of the cable car. It is also the ideal place for hiking, paragliding, climbing or mountain biking. A little further takes you to the cities of Lausanne and Montreux located at the other end of Lake Geneva. Montreux is known for its jazz festival, but this pretty town is also the perfect city to relax and explore. Its grand Belle Époque buildings and the beautiful flora of its microclimate are perfect for a leisurely stroll.

Or you can visit the surrounding countryside, which also includes the magnificent Lavaux wine region. From Montreux, you can take the Golden Pass Railway from Montreux to Zweisimmen to enjoy the mountain scenery. You can also venture into the Alps to towns like Verbier by train, best known for its ski resorts. However, the alpine countryside is just as beautiful in summer.

Where to stay

For those who love luxury, Geneva displays the best hotels of the most well-known high-end brands such as Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and Fairmont. For something with a rich history, the Hotel Metropole has been open since 1854 but recently completely renovated the rooms to offer a more contemporary style. Located just next to the English Gardens, it enjoys a central location. Their Met Rooftop lounge is a must visit even if you’re not staying there. As well as interesting cocktails and gin pairings, a selection of tapas dishes are available to accompany the stunning lake views.

If you have more of a budget or plan to explore outside of Geneva, the Hilton Geneva Hotel and Conference Center is a good option with a large pool, central terrace, easy access to the airport and trains to Montreux and downtown. -of the.
