5 expert tips to save on your hotel stay

With less than two months left in the year, Canadian travelers are eager to enjoy a vacation before the end of 2022, albeit on a tight budget, which makes popular Black Friday deals particularly enticing.

A survey of 1,000 Canadian travelers by Marriott Bonvoy revealed that while 68 percent of Canadians are planning a vacation by the end of the year, more than 75 percent plan to do so on a budget.

With so many destinations and hotels to choose from, whether you’re traveling within Canada or abroad, it can be difficult to find the best deal, especially if you’re short on time.

To help you in your vacation search, Laura Pallotta, Regional Vice President of Sales and Distribution for Marriott International, has compiled a list of five helpful tips and tricks to get the most bang for your buck when booking a vacation. a stay.

1. Book directly

It can be tempting to use online travel aggregator sites to find the best deal, with multiple brands and properties in one place. While it’s a good idea to shop around, booking directly with the hotel will get you the best deal, in terms of price and benefits.

“Not only do you save on nightly rates, but you can also benefit from value-added incentives such as free breakfast, parking and Wi-Fi at participating properties,” Pallotta’s advice says.

2. Consider urban centers and business districts

If you’re looking to save money on a hotel stay, sometimes compromising on location can lead to a bargain.

“While the financial and business districts are slightly removed from the hustle and bustle of the city centers, you will also benefit from quieter weekends, lower rates and save on larger suites than those downtown,” recommends Pallotta.

3. Take advantage of loyalty programs

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, several avid travelers found themselves with a backlog of loyalty points that went unused as travel was largely halted around the world. Now that travel restrictions have eased, people are taking advantage of those points, cashing them in for “free” or discounted travel, including flights and hotel.

So don’t be the person who leaves money on the table by not taking advantage of loyalty programs.

“Not only will you be able to take advantage of exclusive discounted rates, but you will also be able to earn points in a variety of ways,” says Pallotta’s advice. “Whether it’s through hotel stays, tours or activities (concert tickets, anyone?), or booking rental cars, you’ll earn points as you go!”

4. Consider traveling mid-week

Although long weekends and holidays are popular travel times, that popularity usually comes with a higher price tag.

If you’re looking to save on your vacation, midweek trips are a great option for taking advantage of cheaper fares, including popular resort destinations.

“Consider booking Monday through Thursday at resort destinations to maximize savings,” advises Pallotta.

5. Stay longer

It may seem counter-intuitive to recommend paying for a longer hotel stay to save money, but in terms of nightly rate and booking benefits, a longer stay may be better.

Check the hotel’s website for any incentives based on a particular length of stay.

For example, Marriott currently has a winter sale for savings when travelers stay at a hotel for at least five nights, or seven nights at a resort, for a stay through March 31, 2023.
